Teuss Teun Caa Kaw
Ibou is the founder and artistic director of Teuss Teun Caa Kaw, an organization dedicated to uplifting community through dance, music, and art. Its most recent project, a video series celebrating Sabar’s rich rhythms and virtuosic movement, reflects Ibou’s mission to honor and revitalize the form.
For many years, sabar was an intergenerational traditional dance form in Senegal that was very active across the country, from people dancing in the streets, in their homes, marriages, baptemes and tanabeers. Tanabeers were particularly special as it was a time for people to come together to share in the joy of sabar. It was also a time for people to to show their individuality in inside of complex rhythms.
But, in recent years, sabar has lost some of its vibrancy and soul.
The younger generation do not have a solid understanding of the roots and history of sabar. This lack of knowledge is disconnecting sabar from its foundation and pulling sabar further from its core.
Teuss Teun Caa Kaw is an effort by Ibou to rebirth the beauty and power of sabar.

“My hope is for people to experience the depths of sabar beyond what is seen. I did this by choosing songs from across the world to show that all rhythms are of the same nation, the same heartbeat, the pulse that makes it possible for people to move. These videos honor my home, Senegal, the people and the culture and traditions. ”
